With an objective of maintaining the right balance for sustainable development, PPL has taken appropriate measures towards building a safe environment within and outside the plant. The ISO 14001 certification awarded to PPL in August 2002 for its environmental policy and systems and the upgraded certificate of ISO 9001: 2000 in April 2004 reflect the company’s concern for the environment. PPL has incorporated desired safeguards and measures to maintain a healthy and balanced environment not only within its legitimate commercial environment but also in the neighborhood around it.
Commissioned in June 2002, the Effluent Treatment Plant is the largest of its kind amongst all fertiliser plants in India and has the capacity to treat approximately 200 m3/hr of effluents with the help of a modern Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based automatic control system. Based on the state-of-the-art double lime treatment technology supplied by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur and constructed by M/s. Aireff Detox Incineration Ltd., a Mumbai based environmental engineering organization, the ETP has the potential to treat any effluent.
A state-of-the-art Alkali Scrubber Unit in the Sulphuric Acid Plant has been installed to control sulphur dioxide (in symbol) emissions during start up (commissioned in March 2003).
PPL has established a separate Environment Management Division (EMD). At present EMD is looking after all the statutory compliances and developmental jobs partitioning to the Environment Conservation. EMD is also assisting to the Horticulture and CSR departments as per the guidelines of Ministry of Environment Forest (MoEF).
